We Plant Oak Trees!

We Plant Oak Trees!

There is a reason why many arborists, landscapers, and tree enthusiasts choose oak trees as their favorite tree species. However, there are many misconceptions about growing, planting and maintaining oak trees that you need to know. Start by taking the following T/F quiz:

  • Oak trees grow slow?  FALSE
  • Oak trees lack fall color? FALSE
  • Oak trees can be a relatively disease resistant, fast growing, beautiful option to enrich your property and support your urban forest in a way no other species can?  TRUE!

Oaks have a reputation for being hard to transplant successfully. This can be true if you attempt to transplant oak trees from traditional growing systems. Most operation grow oak trees in large farm fields. Tree roots sprawl out in every direction. At harvest, up to 90% of roots can be cut by the tree spade during transplantation! Irreversible damage is done to the tree by the spade. Some tree species tend to tolerate this process better than others. Oaks in particular do not like their roots to be cut. Many of these trees die quickly from this process but not all. Some oaks stress and struggle to make it through this process, with little or no new growth once transplanted. Trees in this stressed state help oak trees earn the title of being "slow growing."

Oak trees grown in plastic pots have a different problem. Oak roots grow so fast that oaks grown in plastic pots can become root-bound in a single season. A potted oak that is only 5 feet tall may be tightly root-bound, with a high probability of choking itself to death within a few years. We DO NOT recommend ever purchasing a tree grown in a plastic pot.

Both aforementioned growing systems fail to produce healthy, fast growing trees.

WHY WE ARE DIFFERENT

Tom, the arborist and owner of AAA Tree & Landscaping, has been admiring, studying, propagating, grafting, growing, transplanting and maintaining oak trees as a primary focus for over 20 years. The process starts with the selection of healthy, native, locally grown and harvested seed. Each year, Tom seeks out seed from specific trees. Seeds are gathered from native trees with one or more of the following attributes; rapid growth, precosity (early acorn production), superior fall color and perfect form. The intent is to pass on those genetics to a tree you will own. Each seed is individually labeled and tracked to ensure that the best parent trees are selected, those who have a track record of producing offspring with specific traits. In the same respect that Lebron James is more likely to have a son in the NBA than Danny DeVito; choosing a parent tree with superior attributes matters!! Want a tree with rapid growth? We have oak trees growing 7 foot in a single growing season!! See attached image. Want an oak tree with fall color? See attached pictures demonstrating brilliant fall color in oak. Looking to add a tree which will produce acorns at an early age? We have trees specifically grown for early acorn production. See images of trees which produced 200 acorns at four year of age!

WE GROW ROOTS

The foundation of a healthy tree is its root system. Our trees are grown in air pruning systems. Acorns are started in small air pruning containers. These air pruning containers allow roots to flourish without encircling/ girdling. These plants are potted up multiple times into larger and larger air pruning pots as they grow. Trees are grown as large as 15 foot+ in these pots. Our process produces large trees which can be transplanted without roots being cut and without girdling roots. Essentially, we have solved the age-old problem with transplanting oak trees. We have developed a way to grow superior root systems and transplant them without disturbing these roots. This process results in healthy happy trees which will flourish at your property.
